I went to a launch party, as a friend of mine is a huge fan, besides, it was a nice reason to meet with him and drink some beer. Didn't get the game, it was a bit too expensive for something I doubt I'll spend much time on. May get it eventually, when the price becomes more acceptable.

Never was a Starcraft fan. I played the beta, and it just felt like every other RTS out there. I do want to play the single player at some point, but spending $60 just for that isn't worth it. A new Warcraft RTS would of been more my taste.

Well, my friend gave me a 7-hour free trial code, so I'm likely playing with him tonight.

"To the days before World in Conflict, before Dawn of War, before Company of Heroes, when real-time strategy games weren't about flanking the enemy, or laying down suppressive fire. It's a time when they were about frantically clicking a mouse to dig stuff out of the ground before sending bobbly little men to their deaths. It's a primitive game, in that respect. Your marines can't take cover, the maps lack any real sense of depth, and there's still no scope for genuine tactics. To succeed in Starcraft II you need to do what you did in Starcraft: namely, mine fast enough to build enough units to beat the waves of bad guys that are being thrown at you."
This is exactly what I feared. It has been long enough that I might not be to upset to go back to the play a 90s RTS. I agree with the "if its not broken dont fix it" philosophy, but after 10 years I really did expect something new.

...and yet Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are the only RTS games taken seriously for competition.
The thing that puts Starcraft head and shoulders about ever other RTS is the use of ACTUAL strategy and tactics, not pre-scripted, unbalanced bullshit. Starcraft is the only franchise with actual BALANCE. Starcraft is the only RTS that forces battles to happen. The mechanics are meticulous and subtle.
Blizzard experimented with lots of things like cover and such, but they found is slowed down the game and didn't add anything. Forcing players to micro manage their units, rather than letting the game do it for you, is what separates poor players from great players. I've seen battles won base entirely on unit placement and micro-ing the hurt units to the back and putting fresh guys in the front one by one... while staging a counter attack at the main base, while building re-enforcements, while drawing the enemy back into a flank trap... You can't just mass one unit and march across the map.
Base building and resource gathering are there because they force movement in the game. They force players to play on the map, to move out, to take map control. You're forced to scout the enemy, react to and anticipate their moves.
SC2 is, by far, the most advanced, deepest, most exciting, and fun RTS on the market - hands down. The only game that even comes close is SC1.
Dawn of War is ok and all, but it's an extremely basic, shallow game prone cheese and imbalance. This is why it isn't played competitively.

Well that post got me excited. So what do you do when you suck? I played the shit out of the first campaign of the first game. My first game online I won. Then I lost the next 9 in a row, and never played the game online ever again. My friends and I just did skirmishes and we would give eachother 30 minutes then just have at it. It was fun as hell. Or co-op vs the AI

SC2 has a ladder ranking system. You play the first 5 games, probably get owned, and then Battle.net places you in a "league" with players in your approximate skill level. If you keep losing, you automatically get downgraded in rank. If you keep winning, you move up in rank. I found it worked really nicely in the beta - once I got ranked, the matches were a lot more even and more fun.
Also, when you lose, WATCH THE REPLY. SC2 automatically records replays for every MP match. When you see what your opponent did to beat you, you can learn from that strat and how to counter it.
ALSO you can watch some high-level play and commentary on YouTube. Follow casters like HDStarcraft, HuskyStarcraft, and day9tv for some good matches and insightful commentary.

Starcraft is a game (now series) that I recognise the depth and possibilities of, but that I'd never have the time and desire to invest it in order to become really good at... It makes me kind of sad, but, on the other hand, I'll beat quite a few other games in that time and that is my choice. Fundamentally, it's the saddest that I don't have nearly enough time for both single- and multi-player games anymore, so, in essence, I have to choose one. Of course, "quick fun" multi-player games such as FIFA or Need for Speed, or an arcade emulator are well doable, but something that requires practice and learning like Stacraft isn't, sadly.

I said the same thing about COD MW. I was sick at sucking so I decided to dedicate to not sucking anymore at the most popular online shooter for consoles. So after 48 hours. I went from dead last to the top 3 every single round. Sometimes finishing with a 25 and 4.
The problem is it is going to take alot longer for starcraft. For some reason I hated RTSs because of starcraft. It was clearly the best RTS out there, but I hate BEING rushed. I hated Co-op games just because I feel rushed for the sake of other players. Regardless its one of those games where Im upset for not enjoying playing because I know its awesome.
I really hate giving my money to Activision. DAMN YOU BLIZZARD!!!

Not a ton of time right now to play it. I'm still working through SP then I need to do the tutorial crap because I am worse than bad at this game.

I think you can play single-player as much as you want with a guest pass, even after the time expires.
